In Europe, overall influenza activity decreased slightly with influenza
positivity from sentinel sites stable at around 20%, above the 10%
epidemic threshold. The proportion of sentinel specimens testing
positive for influenza remained greater than the proportion testing
positive for SARS-CoV-2. Both influenza A and B viruses were
detected with roughly equal proportions of influenza A(H3N2) and
A(H1N1)pdm09 among the subtyped viruses across sentinel sites.
Nine of 38 reporting countries signaled high influenza intensity and
no countries reported very high intensity. Approximately three
quarters (28/38) of countries reported widespread activity.
In Eastern Europe, influenza detections remained high but decreased overall due to decreasing detections in Belarus, Czechia,
Poland, Moldova, Russian Federation, Slovakia and Ukraine. Influenza detections and ILI increased in Hungary, Kosovo and
Romania. Influenza A(H1N1)pdm09 was predominant in the subregion due to large numbers of detections reported by the Russian
Federation. Intensity was moderate or high in all reporting countries except Hungary. Romania and Kosovo reported influenza
positivity above 40% in sentinel primary care. In Northern Europe, influenza detections continued to decrease in all reporting
countries but influenza activity was moderate in several countries and high in Finland and Latvia. Influenza hospitalizations decreased
in Ireland, Norway. Sweden and England, United Kingdom. Influenza A viruses predominated and the predominant subtype varied by
country with both A(H1N1)pdm09 and A(H3N2) viruses co-circulating in most countries. Finland reported influenza positivity above
40% in sentinel primary care. In South West Europe, influenza detections decreased overall, with influenza A still predominating and
similar proportions of influenza A(H1N1)pdm09 and A(H3N2) reported. Detections decreased in all reporting countries except in
Bosnia and Herzegovina, Greece, Malta, Montenegro and Serbia where detections of mainly influenza A increased. Belgium, the
Netherlands and Slovenia reported decreasing influenza detections in sentinel primary care, but positivity was above 40%. Influenza
activity was moderate in Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Greece and Serbia and high in Croatia and North Macedonia. ILI/ARI
decreased in most countries except Croatia, Montenegro and Serbia. Pooled all-cause mortality estimates from

the EuroMomo network showed an elevated but decreasing excess mortality in all age groups.
