1.5 世界的なポリオ根絶に向けた対応と計画
ポリオに関しては、1988 年５月の世界保健総会において、ポリオ根絶を目指す決議が採択された。この
決議に基づき、「世界ポリオ根絶イニシアティブ（GPEI：Global polio eradication initiative）」（以下 GPEI とい
う。）を中心として、ポリオ根絶に向けた取組が推進されている。
1.5.1 世界ポリオ根絶イニシアティブ（GPEI）
世界保健総会におけるポリオ根絶を目指す決議を受け、WHO と民間団体等で設立された GPEI により、
定期予防接種やハイリスク地域の一斉予防接種、ポリオの症状である急性弛緩性麻痺のサーベイランス
（病原体検査含む）が推進されてきた。これらの取組の成果により、1988 年に 135 か国で患者が発生して
いたが、2025 年 2 月現在、野生株によるポリオ症例が確認されているのはアフガニスタン、パキスタンの
２か国となっている24。
